Rear Extension & New Porch, Milton Keynes

The Client Brief

Our client wanted to transform the rear of their traditional family home in Northampton, replacing a tired and compartmentalised layout with a brighter, more contemporary living space that connected naturally with the garden.

As experienced builders in Northampton, 1Horizon was appointed to deliver Phase 1 through to a fully weathertight shell, managing the structural works, external envelope, roofing, glazing and render before handing the project over ready for its internal fit-out.

The project centred around a substantial rear extension with expansive glazing, alongside a new porch extension designed to refresh the entrance and give the property a more considered appearance from the front.

Rather than simply adding extra floor space, the aim was to change how the home felt and functioned day to day. The client wanted a modern, light-filled addition that worked confidently alongside the existing red-brick property without feeling disconnected from it.

What We Did

We began with the groundworks and structural construction required for the new rear extension and porch, managing the project through to a complete external shell.

To create a contemporary addition that complemented the existing house, the extension was designed with a flat roof, clean parapet and crisp coping detail. A warm, through-coloured render with recessed banding gave the new structure a modern finish, while a red-brick plinth helped tie it back to the original property.

Glazing played a major role in the transformation. We installed a generous run of slimline aluminium sliding doors across the main rear elevation, alongside French doors positioned around the return. The dark frames create a sharp contrast against the lighter render while allowing natural light to flood the new space and opening up views across the garden.

As part of the wider residential refurbishment and extension, we also completed the new porch structure, helping to update the property’s entrance and give the exterior a more cohesive appearance.

The rear extension is now fully glazed, rendered and weathertight, providing a strong foundation for Phase 2. Internal works are scheduled to begin in August 2026, with completion anticipated around November 2026.
