The Client Brief
Our clients wanted to make better use of the generous garden at their detached family home in Boughton, Northampton, by creating a bright, open-plan space at the rear of the property.
As experienced builders in Northampton, our team were appointed to manage the construction from the initial groundworks through to a fully finished and fitted room.
The aim was to bring the kitchen, dining and living areas together into one sociable room that would become the heart of the home. Large areas of glazing were also important, helping to bring more natural light inside while creating a seamless connection between the house and garden.
Unlike many extension projects, there was no existing structure at the rear to adapt or replace. The new single-storey extension was designed and constructed entirely from the ground up, giving the owners a space tailored around the way they wanted to live.
Working with Amico Design on the design element, we acted as main contractor throughout the build.
What We Did
We began by setting out the new footprint and completing the foundations, cavity walls and below-ground drainage required for the extension.
A substantial structural opening was then formed within the rear of the existing property, supported with new steelwork. This allowed the original ground floor to flow naturally into the new open-plan kitchen, dining and living space.
The new cavity brick-and-block walls were constructed using facing brickwork carefully matched to the existing property, helping the extension feel like a natural part of the home.
To maximise natural light, we installed a large roof lantern alongside full-width anthracite aluminium bifold doors and a matching window overlooking the garden.
As part of the wider residential refurbishment and extension, our team then managed the complete internal fit-out, including first and second fix works, plastering, flooring and installation of the new kitchen. The finished space features a large quartz island, two-tone shaker cabinetry, herringbone flooring and integrated appliances.
Outside, porcelain paving creates a smooth transition from the bifold doors into the garden.
The result is a bright, practical and welcoming family space that gives the owners considerably more room for everyday living and entertaining.
